Below is a piece from the Red Bull Stratos website explaining the mission due to take place on October 9th at 5am PT/12PM GMT.
"Red Bull Stratos, a mission to the edge of space, will attempt to transcend human limits that have existed for 50 years. Supported by a team of experts Felix Baumgartner plans to ascend to 120,000 feet in a stratospheric balloon and make a freefall jump rushing toward earth at supersonic speeds before parachuting to the ground. His attempt to dare atmospheric limits holds the potential to provide valuable medical and scientific research data for future pioneers."
Below is a video of the test jump for this mission from approximately 71,580 feet up which should give you an idea as to how high the real jump will be at a staggering 120,000 feet up, 48,420 feet higher than the test jump:

"Throughout the ascent, advanced high-definition/cinematography cameras will beam real-time images of Felix's activities in his space capsule and provide viewers a first-person perspective of the spectacular vista outside. And when he jumps, he will be wearing five high-definition cameras for his descent."
As you can see from the video above, this is an extremely dangerous mission that Red Bull and their team are undertaking but one that has many benefits including increasing safety for space travellers. Plus, it looks pretty cool.
